In Memoriam...Palestinian Poet Mahmoud Darwish

Mahmoud Darwish, the world's most recognized Palestinian poet, whose prose gave voice to the Palestinian experience of exile and occupation, died today, Saturday, following an open heart surgery at a Houston hospital. He was 67.

The Palestinian poet was born in the village of Birwah, Galilee, in 1941. Following the 1948 war, the Israelis demolished the village and the family became refugees. As result of this experience, exile and dispossession became major themes of his writing.

Darwish has received several awards for his work, including the 1969 Lotus Prize by the Union of Afro-Asian Writers, the Lenin Peace Prize in 1983, and France's Knighthood of Arts and Belles Lettres in 1997. Many of his heroic poems have become popular as songs. His work has been translated into more than 20 languagesPrayer

Dr. Abouleish has just published two books titled “Allah & the 99 Names of God” and “Islam in the Eyes of An Artist”. He says that the books represent his lifetime career, his understanding of Islam and his studies of Islamic spirituality. The art work is printed using the best technology and first class material, and the books have hardcover. The author is selling these books at cost, as he hopes to present Islam in a beautiful and peaceful form, not for any monetary gain. Thus, the price is the same as that of whole sale; namely, $15 each + $3 shipping & handling. He also says that the cost from the distributer will be much higher.

EAS Meeting & Graduation Party

Dear EAS Members,

This month, the time of Society's meeting coincided with the happy graduation of a number of its youth, moving from one educational level to the next, or finishing a long fruitful journey of learning to graduate with a bachelor, master or a doctorate degree. In the meeting, we celebrated the joyful occasion, with the graduating and their families.

It was incredible; this year, we celebrated the graduation of eight of the Society's youth: Two of them with doctorates of Medicine and of Dental Surgery; two with Masters of Engineering and of Arts; one of Bachelor in Business Administration; two with High School diplomas; and the last (but not in any way the least :-) ) is graduating from Kindergarten.

You can find a list of the graduates in our previous postings; please say Congratulation when you see them, and hope we continue seeing this many, or even more, of the Society's graduates every year.
